Level 1

Prerequisite: None

Hours:  1 to 500 completion hours (500 hours)

Cosmetology entrance as a level 1 is an introductory program to art, science, and business of beauty culture.  The units of study include basic skills and comprehension in history and opportunity of cosmetology, life skills, your profession image, communicating for success, infection control, anatomy and physiology, basic of chemistry, electricity, properties of hair and scalp, skin structure and growth, principles of hair design, hair styling, shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning.  The skills developed in this course will prepare a student for advancement into level 2, with the completion of 500 hours and passing score of 70 academics

Level 2

Prerequisite: Level 1

Hours:501 to 1,100 completion hours (600 hours)

Level 2 offers a more in- depth study of the principles of cosmetology in a complex approach with more hands on learning and two hours of theory.  The units of study will continue to build on the basic skills developed in the level 1, with the addition of advanced techniques.  The introduction of nail structure and growth, sculpturing, nail art, manicure and pedicure, skin care, facials, hair removal, facial make up chemical-relaxer and perming, hair coloring and lightning, haircutting.  Emphasis is given to customer relations and salon management, preparing the student for entry level employment upon passing the state licensing examination. Upon completion of 1,100 hours and a passing score of 70% academics, a student will progress onto level 3.

Level 3

Prerequisite: Level 2

Hours: 1,101 to 1,430 hours’ completion (330 hours)

Level 3 offers a more in- depth study of the principles of cosmetology in a complex approach with more hands on learning and one hours of theory testing.  The delivery of on the job training will be implemented through clinical service being completed under the supervision of license educator, while student perform the service. Upon completion of 1,430 hours and a passing score of 70% academics, a student will progress onto level 4.

Level 4

Prerequisite: Level 3

Hours: 1,430 to 1,500 hours’ completion (70 hours)

Level 4 offers an intense mock state board of theory testing through multiple choice questions randomly selected for challenge of the mind.  The practical are skills drills in time frames required by the State Board of Virginia.  The delivery of on the job training will be implemented through clinical service being completed under the supervision of license educator, while student perform the service. Upon completion of 1,500 hours and a score of 70% academics, a student will have completed the program, and will have to schedule with state board upon entering level 4 for licensing with National Testing Network for written and practical.
